Speak Up for Democracy

The Knesset will soon take up legislation that targets progressive Israeli NGOs. Under the pretense of greater "transparency," the bill creates a series of new hoops which Israeli groups that criticize Israeli government policy must jump through. Of course, the bill doesn't apply these same "transparency" requirements to the mechanisms that fund Israel’s ultranationalist and settler organizations.

There are two Knesset Members within the governing coalition where our voices can have a particularly strong impact.

MKs Rachel Azaria and Roy Folkman come out of civil society. Each of them once worked at organizations that NIF proudly supports: Mavoi Satum (which fights for women’s rights within the religious court system) and Sikkuy (one of the strongest voices for Jewish-Arab equality in Israel).

Let’s see if we can stop this bill, and even more important, send a message to Israel's centrist politicians -- especially those who were once part of the fight for greater equality -- that there is an enormous constituency of Israel’s supporters around the globe that stands ready to work with them in support of greater equality and democracy.
