Don't Boycott Democracy

The “boycott bill” criminalizing free speech is only one of many anti-democratic measures that have been introduced in the Knesset. Other measures would cripple human rights organizations, further marginalize Israel’s Arab minority, constrict the right of peaceful protest or hamper an independent judiciary.

Let Israeli Ambassador Michael Oren know that we, Americans who love Israel and who cherish our own democracy, oppose these attempts to shut down dissent and limit basic freedoms. Email the Embassy right now – and identify yourself as a supporter of the New Israel Fund.

Dear Ambassador Oren:

The Knesset’s vote to penalize free speech and muzzle Israelis who support even a partial boycott of settlement goods is another indicator of anti-democratic trends given the force of law by the current government. As a supporter of Israel, I am very concerned about measures that further tarnish Israel’s substance and reputation as a liberal democracy, and that threaten the basic freedoms that we Americans enjoy.  I also protest the looming “parliamentary inquiry” into progressive civil society, and the threats to an independent judiciary, one of the bulwarks of any democracy.

More than two years ago, the New Israel Fund, of which I am a proud supporter, predicted that attacks on progressive civil society would broaden to endanger freedom of speech and conscience for every Israeli. I am afraid they were right. Please let Prime Minister Netanyahu know that these measures are weakening the bonds between Israel and the American Jewish community, and making it even more difficult to defend Israel’s actions against its real adversaries.
